Smart Home App

My role
I was the UX/UI designer tasked with designing the Android, iPhone, and iPad experience for an as yet unreleased smart home product.
Process
Familiarising & requirements gathering
An existing demo unit and app had been created, serving as a good introduction to both the functionality of the product and the app design decisions that had made to this point.
I was also provided with a list of the desired functionality for the app on release and those aspects to bear in mind for future releases.
Competitor analysis
The plethora of smart products in the market formed the bulk of the competitor analysis. A few tangential competitors I believed were 'best in class' were also considered for certain aspects of the experience. An example of this was the Apple AirPods due to their simple and seamless connection experience.
To understand the design execution of the more prominent products in the market, I conducted a heuristic analysis of a selection. This enabled me to develop a set of principles to guide the design of the app.
Wireframes
A series of wireframes was created with increasing fidelity to gain an understanding of how the app would be structured. I initially approached this piece by piece, isolating a particular aspect of functionality. Once the skeleton of the experience was complete, I continued to iterate ensuring the experience was cohesive. Feedback was gathered throughout this process from the wider team, ensuring alignment with the existing and planned functionality of the product.
High fidelity
As I worked to bring the wireframes to a higher fidelity, the treatment of the features was further refined and a number of prototypes were created to test the experience in the context of a mobile device. This was crucial to ensuring the more detailed interactions made sense and were consistent with the rest of the app.
Due to an NDA, I am currently unable to share any of the designs online.
